From Dr. Cartwright: Welcome to the Howard Middle School website. In 1927, Howard Middle School was known as Orlando High School. In 1952, its doors as OHS closed and reopened as Howard Junior High School. As a result of the closing of OHS, Edgewater High School and William R. Boone High School opened to serve the students of Orange County. Upon the closing of OHS, the school reopened as Howard Junior High School and eventually transitioned to Howard Middle School. Many students have left Orlando High School and Howard Middle School to do great things in our society including Astronaut John Young.
As the principal of Howard Middle School, I am proud of the accomplishments of our students and teachers. At the conclusion of the 2007-2008 school year, our school was awarded an “A” School Grade from the Florida Department of Education. Our focus at Howard Middle School is multi-pronged: high expectations for all students, immersion in curriculum that is both rigorous and relevant, strengthening basic literacy skills, and ensuring positive relationships among faculty and staff with all children. For the 2008-2009 school year, we are projecting that 60% of our school’s core curricular courses will be advanced. We practice “open enrollment” to ensure all students have access to advanced classes. This “open enrollment” practice is supported by our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. |
